What is Discipleship?

Discipleship is the process of becoming like Jesus and living your life as Jesus would. A disciple is a person who desires to learn from Jesus. Discipleship includes knowing the Scriptures as one develops the mind of Christ, submitting to God’s teachings to grow in the fruit of the Spirit, and following Jesus into the lost and hurting world to do His ministry.

Dallas Willard says a disciple is a person who has decided that the most important thing in their life is to learn how to do what Jesus said to do. . . . Disciples simply are people who are constantly revising their affairs to carry through on their decision to follow Jesus.

Becoming a disciple of Jesus means becoming His student or apprentice. We delve into Scripture and prayer to understand His teachings and values. We desire to live as He lived, balancing time with God and service to others. We hope to develop the same mindset and compassion as Christ and participate in His mission to reach the world.

Disciples of Jesus live out the Great Commandments to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (first and foremost) and then to love others as we love ourselves (James 2:8, Leviticus 19:18). It is a process led by love that happens as we learn to follow Jesus.

How does discipleship work?

Sacred Spaces is committed to helping others on their journey as disciples of Jesus. We meet weekly with individuals and groups, fostering a supportive environment for spiritual growth. We hope that these disciples will, in turn, mentor others and continue the cycle of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20).

If you are interested in either individual or group discipleship, please contact us to discuss options, times, and models. Check out the Getting Started page to learn more.

If you have experienced transformation in your journey of discipleship because of those involved with Sacred Spaces Ministry, you can pay it forward so others can experience that too.
