What do people discuss in spiritual direction?
In spiritual direction, no two sessions are alike. There are no goals or agendas, so the topics may vary. People have the freedom to bring up what they sense or desire. Silence is often helpful in allowing people to settle before they share.
Below are examples of what people discuss:
- Tell the story of your spiritual journey from childhood to today. Include the history of your family and your growing-up experiences. Notice God’s grace and movements.
- Share what has been happening in your prayer life.
- Share your feelings about your relationship with God.
- Share any internal movements (calls, inclinations, intuitions, invitations).
- Share specific blocks or temptations in your spiritual life.
- Share what your patterns or habits are for sustaining your relationship with God.
- Share how you are growing or developing spiritually in your work or ministry.
- Seek help in hearing God’s voice.
- Share how you discern the presence of God in your life.
- Share what is breaking or what is redeeming in your life.
- Share current situations in your life as God is in all things.
- Share hurt, pain, and suffering. Talking, tears, and time make space for God to care for your heart.
- Confess your sins without judgment and with prayer to bring them into God’s light (James 5:16)
- Explore your image of God or self.
- Explore resistance in your heart.
- Explore your doubts.
- Explain your wonderings about God.
- Other topics as related to your spiritual or everyday life
Your initial spiritual direction session can be an opportunity to share your faith journey, hopes, and reasons for seeking a deeper connection with God. While some may benefit from more frequent meetings initially, monthly one-hour sessions are typical. There are no goals or lengthy paperwork. We offer online and in-person opportunities in the north Metro Atlanta area during the business day. Check out the Getting Started page to learn more.
