What are the Spiritual Exercises?

The Spiritual Exercises, developed by Ignatius Loyola, offer a structured approach to deepening one’s relationship with God. These Exercises, rooted in Scripture and prayer, have been embraced by Christians of various traditions for centuries in the Church. They are divided into four themes: sin and God’s mercy, the life of Jesus, the passion of Jesus, and the resurrection – all in the light of God’s love. As individuals engage with Scripture, the Word moves from head knowledge to heart assurance. This transformative experience fosters a deeper love for Jesus, a more intimate knowledge of Him, and an increasing desire to follow Him. The Exercises are not a lesson to complete, but a sacred journey with Christ. It is not to be undertaken alone, but with an experienced companion to listen, encourage, and pray with you.

At Sacred Spaced Ministry, we offer individual and group guidance through the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises. These Exercises can be completed in various formats: a 30-day silent retreat, a nine-month journey integrated into daily life (most common), or a hybrid approach combining both. During the nine-month journey, the frequency of spiritual direction sessions is weekly. The Ignatian Spiritual Exercises can be beneficial for both new believers and those who have been following Jesus for many years. If you’ve been engaged in spiritual direction for some time and desire more of God, consider discussing the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises with your spiritual director.

Pastor Valorie Deel shared these encouraging words regarding her experience in the Spiritual Exercises over 9 months in 2024:

The Spiritual Exercises were life-giving!  There were a couple of things that surprised me and many things that refreshed my soul.  Walking with Jesus from the beginning of the world through His birth, life, death, and resurrection made Him a dear friend.  One that I did not want to leave alone, especially as He headed to the cross when so many had left Him.  The Exercises invited me to receive God’s full forgiveness of sins. I was not looking forward to going back to things that I had already worked through but there was such sweet grace and I learned to give that grace to myself too!  This journey is one that every follower of Christ would deeply benefit from.  I highly recommend the investment of time and heart for the outcome of freedom in Christ!

To God be the glory!
