What are spiritual practices?
The terms spiritual discipline, spiritual practice, and spiritual rhythms can be used interchangeably.
Jesus modeled for us a life full of spiritual practices. Spiritual practices are activities within our power that enable us to accomplish what we cannot do by direct effort. We practice them so that when we have temptations and trials of the flesh, we respond similarly to Christ. Spiritual practices help form us into the likeness of Christ.
Below are some traditional spiritual practices engagement activities:
-Study
-Scripture meditation
-Scripture memory
-Prayer
-Service
-Confession
-Worship
-Celebration (joy from obedience)
Below are some traditional spiritual practices abstinence activities:
-Silence
-Solitude
-Frugality (being conservative about money or food in the desire to give some away)
-Secrecy (giving financial support and serving in secret – without man’s praise or gratitude)
-Sacrifice (giving up something important or a comfort)
-Submission (laying down your will for God’s plan or desires of others)
-Fasting
-Sabbath
Romans 8:29 says, that God has predestined His people to be conformed to the image of His Son. If you desire to become more like Jesus, spiritual practices create more space for God to work in you.
