Why do we need to be formed spiritually?

A 2019 Pew Research survey revealed that many people who identify as Christians have left the church due to a perceived lack of compassion. Compassion is a core characteristic of Christ. As Christians, we are called to love people even when they are vastly different from us. We hear too many stories of Christians judging their neighbors instead of loving them. In addition, research shows many Christians mirror the world in materialism, divorce, and selfishness. God calls us to live a holy life that sets us apart from the world, reflecting the character and life of Jesus. If we are not formed into His likeness, Christians may cause harm to others. And when we are not formed spiritually, the Gospel stops spreading.

When we grow in relationship with Christ, an abundant life filled with peace, hope, love, and joy begins. When formed the fruit of the Spirit shows in our lives. By learning to listen and obey with the Holy Spirit, God’s will is done. As Christians grow in Christlikeness, we can become light and hope to the world.

Spiritual formation is a lifelong process as we open our hearts and minds to Jesus. Being formed into Christlikeness is not a solitary endeavor either; it requires community. We cannot be formed or sanctified by our efforts. It is a work of the Holy Spirit within us. Our part is to learn to cooperate with God in what He is doing within us and around us.
